IMPORTANT THOUGHTS FROM

Sunrise River School

Things You Appreciate

High School students' free admission to activities

Finally! We need students representing at the school events. This is one way to get them there. Thank you!

Learning Spanish

I love that the children get to learn Spanish at such a young age and throughout their time while going to North Branch schools.

Added security is a plus

I appreciate the added security at the front desk and the running of IDs. Great job, Sunrise!

The staff

We have been blessed with an amazing staff that cares about the well being and learning of the students. The emotional learning is just as important as academic learning.

Your Concerns

Class sizes

Class sizes are too large with the new reading program we have. This program is meant for the teacher to have more time to work with small groups and one on one with students but with the size of the classes we currently have that is impossible or extremely difficult to accomplish.

School lunch time

Again this year my kids are telling me how short their lunch time is. By the time they sit to eat, lunch is practically over. I recognize that their days are filled with valuable lessons, specials, and recess (all things I am glad about,) but being made to eat quickly isn't ideal.

Keeping schools secure from intruders

It is important for me to send my child to a place I know she will be cared for and kept safe to the very best ability of teachers and staff.

Lack of cultural opportunities

Where are the cultural opportunities that I hear elementary children from other districts have? Artists in residence, field trips, drama/band class, wilderness exploration, etc. - we have lots of local resources to tap into but seem to be ignoring them.

Field trips and school programs seem almost non-existent

My kids have never gone on a field trip for school. Maybe it's not in budget, but most parents would be willing to pay for their child's portion of bus fee to go to a place such as Como zoo (free). Many elementary schools do programs for grandparents day, holiday, etc. Would like to see more programs.

Additional School Experiences

Longer time outside

Recess or learning outdoors.

Holidays

Kids get excited about the holidays - Halloween, Christmas, but we are supposed to act like they don't exist. No costumes allowed. This used to be a rite of passage for elementary kids to wear their costumes to school.

High potential programs

Currently we do not offer any programs for kids that are exceeding at their grade level, only extra staff for students falling below grade levels. Would like to see staff and money devoted to these students too.

Being a kid

The way our schedule is, it is hard for kids to be kids. It feels like we are on a hamster wheel from the start of the day until the end. Kids are not supposed to talk during lunch (which for elementary is not even 20 minutes). Teachers don't feel there is any time to do fun activities in the class.

Field trips

Field trips offer many new learning experiences, yet our school doesn't seem to do them. If budget is an issue, please ask parents to pay a small portion.
